What We Learn as 3 Year Olds

• Plays cooperatively with other children
• Asks an adult for help when needed
• Uses words to express feelings, “I feel angry”, “I feel happy” in place of temper tantrums

• Recognizes and can sing letters of the alphabet
• Writes their name and recognizes their name in print
• Can sit and listen in circle time for at least 10 minutes
• Can recite all or part of routine memory work (pledge of allegiance, prayers, simple songs)

• Counts 20 or more objects
• Recognizes primary shapes (can point to a circle, triangle, square, and rectangle)
• Recognizes basic colors (can point to red, green, orange, blue, black, purple, brown, yellow)

• Can sit still for 15 minutes to eat (without getting up and no electronic aid)
• Can play independently or with other children
• Knows how to properly grip pencils, crayons, and markers
• Begins to cuts with scissors (can make cuts into a paper)
• At age three and six weeks uses bathroom independently (toilet trained to pull pants up and down, can wipe and flush – will still need help with buttons and zippers)

• Is active for an hour or more every day (running, playing with a ball, etc.)
• Can jump, log roll and kick
• Gets at least 8 -10 hours of sleep every night
• Operates on a normal morning, afternoon, night time schedule (child up by 8am to bed by 9pm)
• Eats healthy food (like fruits and vegetables) and drinks water every day
• Goes to regular doctor appointments and is up-to-date on immunizations
• Has been to a dentist and brushes teeth every day
