What We Learn as 4 Year Olds

• Recognizes letters of the alphabet
• Writes their name and recognizes their name in print
• Uses direction and position words when speaking (up, down, near, and by)
• Shows interest in books and being read to, has favorite books
• Speaks in full sentences, and can tell a story
• Answers who, what, when, where and how questions (“Where are your shoes?”, “What did you draw?”)
• Can sit for 15 minutes in circle time, listen to a book or participate in an art project
• Can recite aroutine memory work (pledge of allegiance, prayers, simple songs)
• Follows 2 step directions (“Please put on your jacket and go stand by the door.”)

• Counts 30 or more objects
• Recognizes primary and advanced shapes circle, triangle, square, rectangle, diamond, hexagon, octagon and heart)
• Is curious and motivated to learn about new topics about animals, the environment, different regions of the world, etc. (tries new activities and asks questions)
• Recognizes basic and advanced colors (can point to red, green, orange, blue, black, purple, brown, yellow, violet, pink, light blue, dark green, etc.)
• Matches and sorts objects by shape, size, or color (can put all blue toys in a pile)

• Knows how to properly grip pencils, crayons, and markers for writing and drawing
• Cuts with scissors (can cut a paper in half)
• Runs, jumps, hops on one foot, throws, log rolls and kicks
• Can put on a coat, and use a zipper. Begins to learn to button
• Uses the bathroom completely on their own
• Knows their first and last name and age
• Follows basic safety rules

• Plays cooperatively with other children
• Asks an adult for help when needed.
• Uses words to express feelings, “I feel angry”, “I feel happy”
• Expresses feelings and ideas in a variety of ways (drawing, pretend play, music, etc.)
• Regulates emotions and behavior (can calm down, can be patient, can adjust to new situations, can let go of anger over small issues like sharing or taking turns)
• Expresses empathy or caring for others (comforts a friend who is crying)

• Is active for an hour or more every day (running, playing with a ball, etc.)
• Can balance on one foot, hop, attempt skipping, climb on playground equipment
• Gets at least 8 -10 hours of sleep every night
• Operates on a normal morning, afternoon, night time schedule (child up by 7am to bed by 9pm)
• Eats healthy food (like fruits and vegetables) and drinks water every day
• Goes to regular doctor appointments and is up-to-date on immunizations
• Has been to a dentist and brushes teeth every day
